A 32-year-old man from Moshupa, Modise Ontiretse, hacked an intruder to death on Saturday. The 24-year-old intruder from Kubung near Thamaga was with two accomplices when they forcibly broke into Ontiretse's house.

The three armed men attacked the man while he was sleeping with his girlfriend and two children in their house in Gaphatshwane lands near Moshupa.

Narrating the ordeal to The Midweek Sun, Ontiretse said that day he slept late around 11pm. "I was woken up from sleep by the deafening sound of the door breaking. I quickly rushed for a small axe that I keep behind the door," he said.

The three intruders used a torch to light inside the house, and upon seeing Ontiretse with an axe, they took cover. However, they did not go far, as they waited outside for the right opportunity to walk back into the house to do what they had come for.

It was when one of the attackers yielded a knife at Ontiretse that he unleashed a blow, hacking the thief with the axe instead.

Seeing blood gashing out from one of their own, the other two attackers fled the scene and the injured man fainted and was later taken by the police to the hospital, where he later died.

Confirming the incident to The Midweek Sun, Moshupa Police Acting Station Commander, superintendent Goitsemang Sekgabo said Ontiretse hacked the suspect that had trespassed into his yard in self defence. Ontiretse was questioned and later released. They are yet to arrest the two suspects and investigations on the matter continue.
