A 20-year-old man from Mokone ward in Morwa village stormed the Mochudi police station to report a house robbery in which his 60-year-old mother was killed in a shocking and unusual incident last week.
The young man reported that he was not home at the time, but upon returning, he found his mother lying in a pool of blood with deep knife wounds on her back and house furniture missing.
The police rushed to the scene, conducted a quick investigation, and took the mother to Deborah Relief Memorial Hospital, where she was certified dead.
During preliminary investigations, the police arrested the son who reported the crime. Upon further investigation, the accused led the police to where he had hidden the missing furniture and other house properties.
Suspicions remained that the accused killed his own mother and staged a robbery, hid house furniture before rushing to report to the police.
Confirming the shocking incident, Mochudi Station Commander, Joel Masilo said the accused appeared in court on Tuesday morning, charged with murder.
"The victim had gruesome wounds on her back that indicated a sharp object was used to end her life," Superintendent Masilo said. He said that the accused will again appear before Mochudi Magistrate on July 9th and that investigations on the matter are continuing.
When asked whether the young man was on drugs, Masilo said he could not draw those conclusions. He said the accused is remanded in jail, while the mother's body has been examined and released to relatives for burial. The accused is said to have older siblings and is the last born in the family.
