A 48-year-old man was trampled to death by a herd of angry elephants at Quxao lands near Maun when a hunting trip by three men inside the Buffalo fence turned horribly wrong.

Details of the unfortunate incident are that the trio illegally entered into the Buffalo fence to hunt in an area that is designated for dangerous animals.

Just after for walking three kilometres into the area, the trio saw a herd of elephants coming in their their direction. When they realised that the elephants were close, the three panicked and ran for their dear lives.

The herd of elephants chased them, and one man got tired and decided to hide behind some bushy trees. The elephants which were trumpeting loudly, broke down the trees and trampled on the hunter in his hiding place.

While the two were running, they met soldiers who were patrolling the Buffalo fence. On hearing their story, the soldiers reported the matter to the police and rescued the two hunters from the dangerous area.

Confirming the incident, Maun Station Commander, Superintendent Dennis Zilawe said the other hunter, was confirmed dead upon arrival at the hospital.

He warned people to desist from entering the Buffalo fence, warning that it is a zone reserved exclusively for extremely dangerous animals.

He revealed that from January 2023, his office recorded three incidents in which people were attacked by wild animals. Of the three cases, two escaped with gruesome injuries, while one died on the scene.

Zilawe said usually people get attacked and killed by wild animals while hunting.
