Africans shower Letsile Tebogo following his mother's death

There has been an outpouring of condolence messages and tributes from Batswana and Africa at large following the passing of Seratiwa 'Sthando-Same' Tebogo, the mother of Botswana's fast-rising sprinter and Africa's 200m record holder, Letsile Tebogo.She always wore her beautiful smile, with a glowing face that served as inspiration to many in the art of being supportive parents.Seratiwa passed away earlier this week on Sunday morning after battling a chronic disease. Her son Letsile, was in the United States representing Botswana at the Los Angeles Grand Prix at the time.Seratiwa took her last breath on Sunday at Gaborone Private Hospital, where she had been admitted. The family officially announced Seratiwa's passing on Monday, stating that she leaves behind a legacy of love, strength, andunwavering support for her children and the family at large.Since then, Batswana have been writing condolence messages across social media networks, all highlighting the immense support Letsile received from his mother. She was always there to celebrate her son's achievements and even made a point to be the first one at the airport to welcome him back home every time he returned from abroad.She also accompanied him on some trips to witness the champion compete with other international athletes. Last year, she surprised everyone by attending the World Championships in Budapest, Hungary, where she watched her son make history as the first African to win a silver medal in the men's 100m finals.Family spokesperson Ralph Kabanyane revealed to The Midweek Sun that Seratiwa was born in a loving family of seven siblings, five sisters and two brothers. Seratiwa was cherished as the beloved youngest member of her family."From her earliest days, Seratiwa embodied the spirit of warmth and compassion. She was a daughter who brought immense pride to her parents.“A sister who provided unwavering support and friendship to her siblings, and an aunt whose love and kindness will be remembered by her nieces and nephews.“Her presence in their lives was a gift, and her memory will forever be a source of comfort and inspiration," Kabanyane stated.He said Seratiwa’s passion for athletics was evident to all who knew her, and that as a dedicated mother, she was an ardent supporter of her son, Letsile, Botswana's athletic icon."Her enthusiasm was infectious, her encouragement relentless, and her pride in his achievements boundless. She stood by him, not just as a mother but as his greatest fan, always cheering him on with a heart full of love and hope," he said.Further, that her dedication extended beyond her immediate family. Seratiwa was a friend and confidante to many, a cousin who could always be relied upon, and a beacon of positivity in her community."Her legacy is one of generosity, resilience, and unwavering support for those she loved. In times of joy and sorrow, Seratiwa had a way of lifting spirits and bringing people together.“Her empathy and understanding were a balm to many, and her laughter could brighten the darkest of days," he stated.The Ministry of Youth Empowerment, Sport and Culture Development has released a message of condolences for the fallen mother of the icon.Gosego Mhlanga wrote on social media: "such a strong African woman. You nurtured your son so well. We admired you together with your son and the beautiful relationship you had with him. Our nation's number one cheerleader, may your soul rest in peace."A message from Asprillah Garogwe reads: "all is well School Boy! Your Mum will always be proud of you! May Her Soul Rest in Eternal Peace!"Seele Mildred Molaodi registered his condolences to Letsile and the sister! "May the good God in heaven give them the peace that surpasses all human understanding in Jesus' mighty name."Keenenao Nthabiseng Phadima wrote, "Be comforted my little brother, mommy has been so supportive and we are grateful God gave us her, may she rest well as it is just a good night."Vincent Rantshokeng wrote, "O kare go thokahetse waaka motsadi. Literally holding my tears back, hakeitse ke e theng tota. But heaven has gained and our star has gained a guardian angel.“I so wish so many parents could borrow a leaf from her book of parenting. She did well for her son. May your cheerful, frisky and jolly soul rest in eternal peace ma and may God comfort and watch over your boy."According to the family, funeral arrangements are currently ongoing and will be communicated soon. The memorial service commenced on Tuesday evening in Block 10.
