Son Of The Soil lives up to hype

The annual Son of the Soil event took place at Serokolwane lawns this past Saturday from morning until past midnight.

Although this year’s event did not draw a huge crowd like in previous years, the event, held under the theme, Kwa re go yang, re kgabile, was filled with lots of dance, song, poetry and fashion. Only one word can describe it all, superb.

The organisers evidently paid attention to detail as evidenced by the fact that everything was well organised, from the parking,to seating arrangement. The social media privy were encouraged to take pictures and post them online under the hashtag, #ReKgabile. Most of the attendants arrived clad in their finest traditional garments with wonderful designs and colour coordination.

The music also resonated with the event, as popular Setswana jams blared throughout the day. A popular song on the day was ‘Dumela re Batswana’ which had many revellers dancing to happily. The MCs of the day RB2 presenter, T.H.A.B.O and Mokaragana’s Amogelang did a sterling job. Some of the highlights of the event include the arrival of the traditional beer.

Due to the wetness created on the soil by the past days of rain, the van carrying the traditional beer got stuck when it was making its way to the tent set aside for it. On seeing this, T.H.A.B.O got off stage followed by some of the crowd members and started helping push the van. Men and women lent their efforts all the while singing and dancing. After a while they managed to pull out the van but like the arrival of a member from the royal family, songs accompanied the van until it reached its destination.

Another memorable moment was when Kgosi Kebinatshwene Mosielele of Manyana started dancing happily much to the delight of the crowd. Mafitlhakgosi, as well as poets Edward Moroka and Maruping group provided entertainment. Some of the guests who had attended last year’s event commented on how they were happy with how the event went on smoothly.

One older lady was even seen dancing as her friends clapped for her. “I paid good money to attend this event so I am going to make sure I get my money’s worth,” she said in fits of laughter.
