Motlhanka is king of the DJs
Kabelo Motlhanka, better known as ‘DJ King,’ is the winner of this year’s Disc Jockey category of the President’s Day celebrations competition.
The event took place on Saturday at Tsholofelo Park and featured two other categories including Live Band and Best Upcoming/Live Act. King, whose secret to winning entails studying his music carefully and conceptualising an award winning set that leaves his listeners with a lasting impression, walked off with a cool P10 000 prize money.
The 29 year-old has been around the block for a couple of years now, refining his craft and is destined for big things. His background in the entertainment industry can be traced to 2008 when his love for music grew to extreme heights. He started off as a sound engineer and soon realised that he could do something bigger when it comes to pursuing his passion.
Soon, he was hopping around the country trying his luck in various competitions including the Sprite and Miller Genuine Draft competitions. He first participated in a competition for DJs at Joint Bar in Palapye where he walked off with P500 prize money.
The love bug for creating banging hits soon saw him playing with established acts in music such as DJ Sly. He also had an opportunity to have his set featured on DJ Obza’s show on Saturday. In 2013, he won the St Louis Summer Fest which entailed performing at the Brandy Norwood show in Wharic Park. He has also had an opportunity to play in Zimbabwe and South Africa, and was also slated for the United States although the trip didn’t happen.
Today, he has several charttopping singles under his belt. His first single titled Le Rene cemented his place in the music industry and proved that he is here to stay. “It was a hit, and was played everywhere. It was even nominated last year under the Best Single in the BOMU awards,” he says. King, who prides himself as one of the best house Djs around, is an all rounder and can bring any house down as evidenced by his Saturday performance.
“I take time when it comes to conceptualising my set. I make sure that the audience can relate with me, and that they can take something from that set,” he explains. His second single from this upcoming album is titled Leading Guitar and it features Zazzi and Kane. Another single titled Go siame is out. He is intending to release Go siame, his debut album soon. The album, recorded at Kings Multimedia Studios in Serowe, is currently being mastered and engineered by Bino.
