Baddest boy in town

At this year’s Grammy Awards, Swedish Congolese singer Mohombi ‘Mo’ Mopoundo (29) won an award for his collaboration with American rapper, Pitbull.

The Grammy winning single ‘Baddest Girl in Town’ is the third from Pitbull’s album titled Dale. Speaking to The Midweek Sun’s Vibe, Mopoundo shares that Pittbull is not only his mentor but also his friend and partner.

“Pitbull and I are in this relationship for the long term,” he shares. This was not Mopoundo’s first Grammy nomination as in 2011 his hit track ‘Bumby Ride’ was nominated in the Best Song category. In the same year he also performed at the Video Music Awards held in Athens, Greece. Mopoundo is not new to the music industry. He previously received nominations at the Kora All African Music Awards in 2003 and 2004.

“My intention is to take African Pop music to a global level and to keep discovering new talents. I am planning on building a cultural centre in Kinshasa (DRC) where I am also based,” he says. Mopoundo explains that his Grammy win was a memorable achievement not only for him personally but all fellow African musicians and artists. “It felt like I was opening a door for many other African artists and mainly our own artists that we are developing at La Clique Music label,” he adds.

In 1999 Mopoundo’s family escaped war-torn DRC to Sweden when he was only 13 years. This phase is reflected in his music which he describes, “International, happy and hopeful. My music brings joy to people,” he says.

Mopoundo is inspired by artists that dare to go against the stream but who also keep their values. He does not believe that his life would be a success without his family’ support,

“My mother has been the pillar of my life, until my son was born. I wouldn’t be the successful and creative person and performer that I am today without the love and support of my family and the Journey of Avalon,” he adds.

Sorry ladies the man is not available, single but not available. “I have never been more in love,” adds the hot young man.
