UB Hawks have put in quite an amazing performance in the Southern Block Promotional Playoffs. The daring Gaborone based team has been full of confidence and are now top of the table.
The animated Hawks started their campaign against Tlokweng based, Naughty Boys; they came out tops with a narrow 1-0 victory. In their second game, the UB boys were like a house on fire thrashing Mochudi United, 3-1 to claim their top spot.
Although the team is missing their head coach, Alex Malete, who is currently serving as the Women’s Senior Football National team Assistant Coach in Morocco, where the team is competing in the WAFCON tournament, they have not put their heads down.
Speaking in an interview recently, Malete said the boys just need to continue where they left off last season, “ throughout the season, we have been very consistent until around February when our players had injuries and some had school commitments but now the squad is fully fit and University students are on vacation so you can understand the performance,” he said.
Malete further added that they want to qualify and play in the National First Division just like any other team that is in the playoffs, “we have all worked for this opportunity, the players, technical team and the University management; so we hope we will represent the institution very well since our preparations were also spot on.”
Malete said that he is expecting quite a lot from the team even during his absence, because for them to be where they are, they were a collective and one man doesn’t make a team. “It won’t come easy, there should be a lot of sacrifices along the way, but we expect the team to do much better.”
The Gaborone Regional Football (GRF) Champions are enjoying their best run currently. The youthful team still has to play two games as it is not done and dusted for them. The team still has to play against Young Stars and their biggest challenge will come when they face an experienced VTM, a game which will somehow determine their fate in a few days.
The team is currently top of the table with 6 points followed by VTM who have collected only 4 points. Meanwhile, Young Stars are still in the mix with just two points from two games, Naughty Boys have 1 point while Mochudi United are yet to collect a single point.
