Gaborone United has appointed former Botswana Football Association (BFA) Technical Director, Benny Kgomela as the head coach on a one-year contract.
The former Palapye Swallows coach will help the team traverse the continent and claim its prize in African football, given the talent and quality they have put together.
In an interview this week, Kgomela said he wasn’t lost to football but has been at Palapye Swallows. “I have been coaching Palapye Swallows and I am excited by the new job, I have met the players and I believe we will have an exciting journey together."
He added that the mandate includes winning the league, local trophies and going all the way to reach the CAF champions League knockout stages.
“Traversing Africa won't be a problem for us, for me I have travelled the continent while I was at BFA, I have seen it all and I have observed very well a lot of issues.”
Although there is a lot of talent at GU he said he will treat players equally and will be a father to all of them which will build their relationship.
“My vision is to go outside the country because we are being sidelined here; we have the talent and we can showcase it elsewhere, if we pass the group stages, certainly we will have many teams
knocking at our door, our ambition is to go through the group stages.”
“Why should we fail, we have the quality, the talent we are supported by the management and the director; we have two young vibrant coaches so we have no room for failure,” he said.
Conversely, he said reaching the knockout stages will mean they play in the recently formed Super League and that will earn the club a lot of money and he is confident they will make it.
Kgomela started his role immediately as the club prepares for the CAF Champions League Preliminary Round clash with AS Vita from Democratic Republic of Congo on September 10.
Although Kgomela holds the required CAF A License which is required to Coach at the continental showpiece, he will still have to explore his ways and find the perfect philosophy for the team.
However, the former FC Satmos Manager will be entrusted with leading Gaborone United across Africa through the assistance of Pontsho Moloi and Joel Mogorosi on the dug out.
Speaking in an interview, Gaborone United Media Manager, Tshepo Molwane said they believe Kgomela has all the expertise to lead them across Africa.
“He served as Technical Director at BFA, when we chose him for the job, we looked at his capabilities and qualifications, for to travel across Africa, we need a qualified and highly capable coach, he has the A License.”
Molwane further added that they looked around locally because they wanted to empower Batswana but their options were very limited.
“We didn’t want to look over the borders and rope in a coach who will still have to familiarize himself with the players, our local options were limited; we wanted a Motswana as we have done before with Innocent Morapedi.
Quizzed if the coach will have the entire control of the team or he is a disguise for Pontsho Moloi to head the team in the continent since he is short in qualifications, Molwane dismissed the question.
“We can not go much into details of speculation, we believe Coach Kgomela is the right candidate to lead the team both locally and continentally."
In meantime, the former head coach, Innocent Morapedi has been redeployed to the position of Technical Director.
