FROM ME TO YOU

Dear reader

You guys seem not to know this, but there is a very easy way to join the Directorate of Intelligence and Security Services (DIS) in Botswana, and become an agent of the organisation without having to go through any interviews or any form of training.

Wena just get yourself on the wrong side of some political charlatans in Botswana and then wallaa (viola), you have landed yourself a position as an agent at the DIS. O botse that lawyer chap the people love to call ‘Celebrity Lawyer.’ O kile a bitswa DIS agent ya modomi.

Also ask former Editor of The Telegraph, Spencer. In fact, check with several journalists across the government and private media divide – many have been ‘unmasked’ as DIS agents who are working for the ruling party to destabilise all efforts towards opposition unity.

Heela, if you loathe being associated with the local spy agency or the BDP, put on your rose-coloured glasses and talk of only the beautiful things you see about these chaps. Even when they blatantly err, look away and praise them the best way you can. It is just what it is; otherwise you gain employment as a DIS agent – without the attendant benefits of course!

And this is especially common with the raucous political activists at the main opposition party the Umbrella for Democratic Change (UDC), more specifically maFearFokol. Batho bao!

Kana even some media houses that dared write any negative truth about them suddenly became DIS-funded organisations used to destabilise opposition unity and to break the BNF or the UDC apart.

Many who for a long time had known one Baatlhodi Bucs Molatlhegi as an entrenched BNF stallion will recall how he was suddenly labelled a DIS agent the moment he raised his hand to contest the presidency of the BNF.

It was that easy for the man to land himself the job as a spy used by the ruling party to break apart the BNF and by extension, the UDC. Owai, his stint with the DIS did not last long as he lost against Boko and was soon forgotten.

Once upon a time it was Sidney Pilane who when he differed with the UDC leadership and its members was labelled a DIS and BDP Trojan Horse within the people’s project, to ensure there was chaos at the opposition. Gotwe o rekilwe.

Yet when he had earlier been fighting in the corner of the UDC against the likes of Ndaba Gaolathe, Phenyo Butale and Wynter Mmolotsi at the BMD, he was a hero who was even labelled ‘Monna Wa Modimo’ by the UDC President.

Ndaba along with his men boButale, Mmolotsi, Chillyboy Kgoroba and others were thrown to the dogs and under the bus, gotwe ba ja le DIS le Domi to cause confusion in the opposition ranks.

In recent months when the Alliance for Progressives (AP) were flirting with the Botswana Congress Party(BCP) towards forming an alliance of their own, Phenyo Butale was especially singled out as one of the highly-paid agents at the

DIS, with Dumelang Saleshando also said to be on the payroll of the spy agency.

Dumelang was deemed a crafty secret agent used by the ruling party to prolong regime change; even rewarded with government tenders through his company Dinesh!!

The real owners of Dinesh must have wondered what all the fuss was that about – although some of the ever so well-informed political activists came up with a theory that the DIS was smart enough to tamper with the shareholding information of the company so that Dumelang’s association with it was concealed.

Former Gabane MP Pius Mokgware was also counted among the people working with the DIS and the BDP to mastermind strategies that would prolong regime change. But now Butale, Ndaba and Mokgware have since lost their jobs with the DIS, as soon as they joined forces with the UDC!

Over the past months there was one Molemi Leinane, a celebrated staunch supporter of Ian Khama and a very loyal member of the BPF who often took to Facebook to record live videos through which he would bash anybody who was seen to be anti-Ian.

His crime was to start complaining that some politicians were using Ian for personal and political gain – that they did not really love Khama but were using his charm and popularity with the masses of Gammangwato to gain political mileage.

His crime was when he started showing his disapproval of how the UDC leader Duma Boko was taking the place of BPF president Biggie Butale in the run-up to the parliamentary by-election at the Serowe West constituency.

The last straw that broke the camel’s back was when he opted to pull out from working with the BPF for what he felt was a political breach of all protocols relating to the campaign activities ahead of the Serowe West elections.

He too was attacked from various angles, labelled a long-term DIS agent who was planted in the BPF by Domkrag to destabilise the party, and by extension the UDC. Nnyaa in the past when the same man spoke the same language as everybody else that matters, he was counted among the most loyal foot soldiers of the BPF, e bile ba bitswa Baiphatlakanyi (suicide bombers) of the party as they were prepared to die for their godfather and the party.

Heeee... kana even just a few weeks ago the DIS had also gained a new agent in one Resego Kgosidintsi. The feisty young firebrand also known as Petrol Bomb had just announced her decision to step down from serving in the BNF structures, choosing to relegate her contribution to the party as a member with no portfolio. It appeared then that many had understood her to be dumping the party altogether. Already, she was getting messages informing her to silently enjoy her DIS money and stop whining on social media.

And then there was Guma Moyo! When there were fights within the BPF that were threatening the opposition unity talks, he was blamed and stories were peddled that he was actually sent by the DIS go phatlakanya BPF le sekhukhu. Before the fights for BPF positions, nnyaa he was a God-sent hitman who would share the secrets of the ruling party and destroy Masisi. He was the darling of the opposition front, even addressing rallies in the blue and sometimes yellow colours of the bosom buddies in UDC and BPF. He has since left the project, gatwe jaanong o isitse pego ya se a se boneng ko opposition.

Around that time as well, the BPF spokesperson Lawrence Ookeditse was similarly labelled a DIS agent sent to dissipate the BPF because he seemed at the time to be fighting against the Khamas. But you see, the who- is-who in the UDC had aligned themselves with the Khamas at the time and soon everybody was labelling Lawrence a dubious and untrustworthy chap nurtured by the ruling party, gotwe in no time he would be back at the BDP along with those who had already decamped to the party.

Today, ironically, he is on the side of the Khamas as well as the UDC, and has become one of the people leading the chorus ya gore Biggie Butale is a DIS agent working with the BDP to destroy the BPF! Heelang! Imagine Biggie at some point was among the people who were also vocal about some people being agents of the DIS to break the opposition apart – today because the UDC partners, BPF, no longer want him as their party leader, he has become a DIS agent himself.

This is after they had worked out every plan to remove him from the party, beginning with accusations of sexual misconduct which turned out to have been a mere set-up that never eventually achieved its intended purpose. Then came allegations of misconduct that led to suspension after suspension at the BPF. In fact, those suspensions were on a freefall this past weekend, where the suspended members suspended their suspender soon after the suspender had suspended the suspenders. Owai, le nna I was just as confused gore tota gatweng. It has never even been clear who really suspended who first, and an attempt to clarify that curiously showed that Butale’s suspension was on Friday afternoon, whereas he was part of the campaign festivities of the BPF and UDC later that night, and was even included in the rally’s widely distributed programme. So in the words of those who suspended Butale, when he spoke on

Friday night at the party rally in Serowe as its president, he was on suspension already, and in their eyes, a DIS agent was pretending to be campaigning against the BDP.

Tota mme e bile mo go Butale, one can tell that by hook or by crook, the man is going to be bundled out of the BPF. It looks like it’s just a matter of time. Yet I recently wrote him two letters, imploring him to move away from the evil plot to push him aside and make way for the party’s godfather, Ian, who has not hidden his aspirations to become the next BPF President.

Mathata Butale o ganne go ntheetsa – yet I still say: Monna wa Modimo, tswaa mo partying ya batho. Kana tomorrow you will be telling us gore ba kgoromeleditse kgomo ee tshelang mo tseleng to kill you - the same way you used to say about the DIS when the BPF people still loved you. Ke bao today ba re ke wena leDIS. How I love the ease with which one can become a DIS agent in this country. By just writing this letter, I am sure that in their very sharp eyes, Fana Magosi is already my boss!
