One of the things that has troubled Gaborone City Mayor Austin Abraham the most this year, is the state of uncleanliness brought about by the poor collection of garbage around the city.
Abraham notes that ever since his tenure began in June, collection of garbage has drastically dropped.
The mayor said that the Town Clerk is the one that should ensure that garbage is collected through the department of environment but this is not the case as the city is embarrassingly dirty.
This has led to some residents dumping waste illegally across the city creating heaps of waste.
Abraham admits that there is a serious problem at the city council with regards to waste collection schedules, and pleaded with residents to bear with the city council. Abraham also admitted that there are certain sections of the
city that are in the dark, as street lights do not work.
He noted that the powers of the political arm of the council is limited as they can only speak and not hire and fire people.
When contacted for comment, Gaborone Town Clerk Lebuile Israel said that they are aware of the various challenges in the city and are working hard to fix the problems.
On the dark streets, he shared that issues of cable theft across the city has not helped the situation but the council has now resorted to using solar lights as a mitigation.
Israel added that there is a comprehensive plan in place that addresses the issue of garbage collection, potholes, streetlights and other issues that is already being implemented.
