- They plan to produce their own sunscreen lotion

The Albinism Community has revealed its ambitious plan to embark on a farm project that will produce Aloe Vera and other medicinal products.

According to the Chairperson of Tshimologo Association for the Albinism Community, Ofentse Serurubele, if successful the project will assist their plans to manufacture their own sunscreen ointment.

Aloe Vera is a medicinal plant that has been used to treat various health conditions including skin conditions.

Serurubele believes that the project will help create the much-needed jobs especially within the albinism community. The Association is working on creating strong partnerships with researchers and scientists to bring this dream to life.

For a long time the Association has been complaining that the education system does not cater for needs of the Albinism community.

For example, there are no teaching aids in classrooms from as low as kindergarten to university level. They also request that free spectacles be made available for learners to reduce blindness.

“The lives of Albinism people would be better if they could be assisted with sunscreens and protective clothing,” Serurubele said.

Serurubele advised employers to always consider their shortcomings. She has observed that in some work places, Albinism people are made to work in open and uncovered places although it is harmful to them.

She advised employers to ensure that appropriate equipment is available for people living with albinism to execute their duties.

A Human Rights Activist, Yellowman Kgosietsile said they have already made submissions to the ongoing consultative meetings for the review of the constitution.

They plead for the right to health, decent housing, decent jobs and are hoping that their opinions will be considered. Kgosietsile said their members are still discriminated against as many of them are not employed even though they have requisite skills.

A parent of an albinism child, Laone Goaba said when her child was born in 2004 it was a challenge as she was unemployed and struggled to buy sunscreen.

She applauded government for assisting parents who have albinism children because they are now provided with sunscreen in public hospitals.
