More residential plot allocations expected

The Tlokweng Land Board has allocated 104 residential plots in Mmaratanang Ward.

Elijah Katse, the chairman of the Tlokweng Land Board said these plots are part of the 470 previously identified within the village and are intended to facilitate the densification of developments as prescribed by the Revised Tlokweng Development Plan of 2001 – 2030.

According to the 2022 Population and Housing Census, the population of Tlokweng is 55, 508. Katse explained that the Batlokwa Tribal Territory covers an area of about 22, 000 hectares of land – which has been declared a planning area under the Town and Country Planning Act of 2013.

“The Land Board, through Presidential Directive 29(B)/2015 gives preference to people originating from the village on a 60/40 percent proportion in favour of Batlokwa”. Katse said this is because Tlokweng is close to Gaborone.

“The current waiting list is at 59,164. However, the Land Board continues to ‘clean’ this list since it is not everyone in it that is eligible for allocation”.

Katse explained that due to Tlokweng having limited land for expansion and its proximity to Gaborone, the demand for land is high.

According to Katse, the plots were identified through consultation with the Sub District Council Physical Planning office. Katse said that the Land Board will continue to dispose of all readily available land through relevant policies and processes.

Katse explained that the revised Tlokweng Development Plan (2001 - 2030), proposes settlement expansion into the Maratadiba and Sefoke areas. The chairman hinted that more residential plot allocations are therefore expected going forward.

Katse said all those who were being allocated land were expected to have submitted all relevant documents to facilitate registration at the Deeds office even though the land delivery process has started being realised through the Land Information System (LIS).

“The Land Board will also be monitoring the development of these plots as per the prescribed covenants”. Katse noted that because of the responsibility given to them they will carry out their obligation to avail land to Batswana in line with the Reset Agenda and for socio-economic development.
