When announcing part of his cabinet early this week, President Advocate Duma Boko issued a stern warning for those who have made parliament a circus in the past, saying his administration has no time for the political jabs and antics that have long characterised parliamentary sessions.Without mincing his words, President Boko stressed that under his administration, parliament will take a more serious approach, with less focus on playfulness. He noted that previous administrations allowed too much time to be spent on ridicule and jokes, leaving little room for meaningful debate on serious issues. However, this will change moving forward.“If you come to joke, you'll be joking by yourself. We will ignore you,” Boko said, taking a light jab at the rowdy behavior that has defined many parliamentary sessions, behavior that has even seen MPs like Francistown West's Ignatius Moswaane ejected from the chamber. This time, Boko promised, parliament will focus on substance, not sideshows.“We will not engage the jokers,” he stated, signaling a shift towards meaningful deliberation and serious governance.Boko further underlined his administration's commitment to accountability and openness, stressing at his own readiness to face Parliament and respond to pressing matters though, as he dryly noted, “when available, of course.”Beyond domestic politics, Boko turned his attention to Botswana’s international standing, pledging to restore investor confidence and positioning Botswana as a serious ,respectful and disciplined nation ready to lead on the African stage.“We have led in having a stable democracy for many years . We have also now led at a time when it is increasingly difficult for those who have been in power to exit. We have shown that for us it is seemless, easy and orderly. And so we are exemplary. We are going to lead this continent, we have a lot to offer.
