President Mokgweetsi Masisi has allegedly dropped his political protégé, Member of Parliament Karabo Gare. Gare, who succeeded Masisi as MP for Moshupa–Manyana when the latter became President, was widely regarded as one of Masisi’s groomed successors.

The fallout is believed to have started when Gare expressed interest in contesting for the chairmanship at the upcoming Botswana Democratic Party (BDP) elective congress scheduled for the weekend. Sources allege that President Masisi was not in favour of Gare’s candidacy and instead pledged his support to Kefentse Mzwinila.

When approached for comment on whether it is true that Masisi does not support him, Gare remained diplomatic, neither confirming nor denying the claims.

“I respect President Masisi as the former head of state and outgoing leader of my party. I also look forward to working with the new President of the BDP as its Chairman. I don’t want to dwell on hearsay, I’m focused on my campaign, and I’m going to win with the people’s support. That’s what matters to me,” said Gare.

President Masisi did not respond to phone calls seeking clarification on whether he supports Gare’s candidacy or why he appears to have chosen Mzwinila over him.

Mzwinila also did not answer his phone when contacted for comment on whether Masisi has endorsed his candidacy.
