* Intends to increase Chema Chema Fund to P500 million
President Mokgweetsi Masisi has voiced out displeasure in his surprise visit to Parliament this week with the way Members of Parliament oppose the idea of using Identity Cards to cross into Zimbabwe.
Masisi criticised detractors of the proposed idea of crossing the border using Identity Cards between Botswana and Zimbabwe. He explained that the ID card is not unrestricted entry to one’s country, and the government is trying to eliminate the urge for illegal immigration.
Botswana is a signatory of ease of migration at the African level, Masisi noted that this is why the government of Botswana is making strides to ensure that people travel in an easier manner.
He said that those that disagree with this stance are xenophobic yet people interact and work with Zimbabweans every day. He told Opposition members to desist from portraying Botswana as a land of hateful people. Masisi told Parliament that he fully backs up the budget which was presented by the Minister of Finance, revealing that it is the largest financial budget in the history of the nation.
Masisi said that the BDP-led government has always delivered on their promises as they have made headway in connecting water throughout the nation.
He said that the Temo Letlotlo programme has an incentive of up to P500 000 for farmers that do well in the programme. The president revealed that in April, Thuo Letlotlo will be revealed and the two programmes will be weaved together to benefit all Batswana.
“In Selibe-Phikwe the biggest project of its kind is running, where for the first time a whopping 70 000 tonnes per year of fresh fruit will be exported to international markets.”
Masisi said that Selebi Phikwe Citrus farm is a prime example of the programmes and schemes brought forward by the government to help the people of Botswana to empower themselves.
He said that international markets are opening up to the Botswana market and the government will increase artificial insemination centres in Botswana.
Flaunting the BDP manifesto, Masisi said that they will introduce a programme where local farmers will grow feeding grass for their livestock.
He said because of the budget given to them by the government they have been able to expand the efforts of the government to allocate land to its people.
Masisi said that the budget that was shared recently will increase the economy of the nation and the government has been able to bring forward a historic diamond deal which will usher in P10 billion in 10 years.
According to the President, the hope is to have value addition in all industries and this is made possible by the budget that is brought forward by the Ministry of Finance.
He is surprised that opposition parties are against the proposed budget, and he questioned why elected Members of Parliament would not want to see the lives of those that sent them improving for the better.
Masisi also instructed the Minister for Finance to increase the budget for the Chema Chema fund from P200 million to at least P500 million. He explained that this move is done because some people are criticising something that can benefit the people of Botswana.
