Did Balopi bite more than he can chew?

As the clouds of corruption loom over the Botswana Democratic Party (BDP), the once powerful party now finds itself teetering on the brink of a leadership crisis.With the BDP President Mpho Balopi set to appear in court for corruption and money laundering charges, the calls for his resignation have reached fever pitch.Many within the party, including prominent members and supporters, are demanding that Balopi step down and make way for a clean and ethical leadership.But as the pressure mounts on Balopi, another name keeps resurfacing - Dr Mokgweetsi Eric Masisi. The former president, who was ousted following a controversial defeat of the BDP in the 2024 general elections, has been gaining support from a section of BDP members who see him as the solution to the party's woes.With more democrats abandoning the sinking ship of Balopi's leadership and joining the Masisi camp, the divisions within the party are deepening.Masisi continues to enjoy international recognition as a reputable statesman engaged in African electoral observation missions and peacekeeping. The famous "Sisboy entrance dance" seems to be gaining more support than ever before.The return of Masisi as party president seems inevitable, but the question remains - will he be able to steer the BDP back on course and regain the trust of the people? Or will the tarnished reputation of the party continue to drag it down into further disarray?“We continue to watch the political drama unfold within the BDP; one thing is clear - the need for strong, honest leadership has never been more crucial. The fate of the party and the country hangs in the balance, and it is up to democrats, the citizens, to demand accountability and transparency from those in leadership”, a BDP source said.BDP Secretary General Kentse Rammidi told a press conference on Tuesday this week that Balopi continues to be BDP President. He said the central committee deliberated on the matter during its monthly meeting on Monday this week.According to Rammidi, they are still processing the matter, and while at it, Balopi will continue to serve as president. He said the party will allow Balopi to clear his name but indicated that the party will not be supporting him in his legal battle against the corruption charges. He said party members can support Balopi in their personal capacities.Unless Balopi decides to step down, only the 2027 elective congress can remove him from the seat.The fallout between Masisi and former President Ian Khama seems to have been the only thing that sustained Balopi's presidency, as many believed he would have total control of the BDP following the infamous apology in Serowe.Balopi fell out with Masisi when he was a cabinet member and subsequently resigned his post. The duo’s postures at BDP gatherings have proven that while Balopi has announced reconciliation and forgiveness for the good of the party, it has not been the case for the two leaders. This is said to be further straining the BDP."It is time for the BDP to remember that they serve at the pleasure of the people, and it is the people who will ultimately hold them accountable for their actions. The time for change is now, and we must stand united in our call for a better, more ethical Botswana," a former Member of Parliament aligned to the Masisi camp said."We are not going to rest until justice is served and our democracy is restored. The future of our party depends on it. We are going to rise together and demand the leadership that we deserve," a BDP National Youth WingExecutive Committee member who opted to remain anonymous said, insisting that Balopi and “his boys are very vindictive and all out to destroy political careers”.It seems the famous "It's our time to eat" phrase by Mpho Balopi has come back to haunt him. The return of Masisi and Guma Moyo is a thorn in Balopi's presidency, with indications that the Central Committee is divided on the next route.Guma Moyo is having the last laugh after Balopi pushed to have his membership reinstatement rejected.As the plot thickens, fresh information suggests that there are also plans to pin financial mismanagement on Balopi at Tsholetsa House in an effort to put the final nail in his presidency.
