Member of Parliament for Nata-Gweta, Polson Majaga has decried the high costs politicians incur when campaigning for general elections, as well as the short period they will have for campaigns.
Speaking in an interview with The Midweek Sun in Nata, Majaga said politics is very expensive in Botswana, especially for candidates contesting for constituencies that are widespread with poor road network.
The legislator also pointed out that the time for campaigns is running out as it is just four months before the expected date of elections. Majaga said candidates with personal financial resources may have an unfair advantage over those relying on party funding, thereby skewing the democratic process.
"There is currently limited outreach as without timely funding, candidates may struggle to reach all constituents, particularly in large or remote constituencies, reducing voter engagement and awareness," Majaga said.
He said late disbursement of funds can lead to hasty and poorly planned campaigns, potentially causing logistical challenges and inefficiencies.
