Specially-Elected Member of Parliament Unity Dow who recently resigned from Botswana Democratic Party (BDP) is allegedly ready to join Botswana Congress Party (BCP).

Sources say that Dow has already made up her mind on her next political move but wishes to keep her intentions private for now. They allege that Dow has already met the BCP Women’s Wing and has been accepted as one of them.

“It is a closely-guarded secret because Dow is a Specially-Elected Member of Parliament, if she publicly announces her intentions, a motion of no confidence might just be passed against her,” the source said, adding that a calculative Dow might be waiting for her term to elapse before she openly shares her next political move.

Dow was this week not available for comment.

According to a press release of 20 June 2023 from Parliament, she is currently in Brussels, Belgium attending the 62nd session of the Organisation of African, Caribbean and Pacific States (OACPS) Parliamentary Assembly and the 43rd session of the ACP-EU Joint Parliamentary Assembly, which started on the 19th of this month and will end on the 28th June 2023.

Reached for comment about Dow’s intended move, BCP spokesperson Mpho Pheko said she could “not confirm nor deny the allegations.”

Dow told the media in a press conference last month that she left the BDP because her relationship with the party leadership had broken down beyond repair.

She said there is a trust deficit borne from a growing culture of lying, fabricating and generally taking the view that the end justifies the means within Botswana.

“All of us are tired of being silent and afraid,” Dow said. She stated that the country's democracy and economy are under siege because men and women are too silent to call out the things that are wrong within the nation.

At the time, she said she had not spoken to President Mokgweetsi Masisi and the Vice President Slumber Tsogwane in over a year.
