The Umbrella for Democratic Change (UDC) continues to amplify its voice against the Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) as the general election approaches. Addressing the media this week, UDC President Duma Boko was adamant that the IEC rigged the 2019 elections.
He said the IEC is not independent and does not play fairly with other political parties. Boko who has written to the IEC earlier this month about alleged gross irregularities in the electoral process says that the IEC has not given him a reply.
In the letter, Boko highlighted critical issues related to voter registration, data management, and stakeholder involvement.
His address, which was centred around the integrity of the IEC highlighted that data at the IEC is easily manipulated. He warned that if the IEC is not scrutinised by the media fraternity people may lose confidence in it.
Boko wondered why the IEC does not do a back end audit of their systems so that people may be assured of the integrity and independence of the institution.
“There is a democratic malfunction in this country,” Boko said, adding that if things continue this way people will be angered by the actions of the IEC.
He urged young people to register to vote in large numbers. He warned the IEC that they will not be able to do things that are not in the Electoral Act as they allegedly did in the last election.
Boko threatened that civil strife will descend on this nation if things do not change, further warning that individuals who allow themselves to be used by the IEC will land in danger if they act in ways that contravene the Electoral Act.
Boko said they want to observe the registration of voters for themselves, so that members of the UDC can kill any doubt they have of voter rigging when names are entered into the voters roll. He noted that they do not want to go the legal route as they prefer to iron things out with the IEC.
Boko reiterated that he blames the loss of the 2019 general elections to voter rigging by the IEC and the government. He said that what took place in the last election was blatant corruption, noting that the UDC lost the case they had against government because the Chief Justice back then allocated two more judges to their case who were not originally part of their case.
Boko said that the Judges who presided over their case ignored the facts on the ground and acted in a strange way that did not seem to have any integrity in it.
He added that he is not inciting any violence when he says that there will be chaos if the elections are rigged, but he is just stating facts as people will react in an angry manner if their democracy is being stolen.
“People are angry, and when they are angry they show you the face of God, God doesn’t like impropriety, God doesn’t like injustice, God hates oppression, the people are angry,” Boko said.
He added that this is a warning to the IEC and not a threat. He said that it is time they change their ways before it all catches up with them.
