Mabalane residents shocked
The quiet village of Mabalane in Kgatleng East has been shaken after the sudden death of Dutch Reformed Church pastor, Peter Isaac Tau.
The pastor was discovered hanging in the rafters of his home, leaving the community and congregation grappling with shock and unanswered questions. No note was found, and the reasons behind the tragedy remain unknown.
A close source told The Midweek Sun that Pastor Tau lived with his wife, who left for work as usual, only to return and find her husband deceased. The shocking discovery has left many in the village struggling to comprehend how someone so respected could take his own life.
Pastor Tau was remembered fondly by those who knew him in both spiritual and educational settings. Former students recall him as a strict yet inspiring Setswana teacher at Mookami junior school in Kanye.
“He was a disciplinarian who ensured we excelled academically and in character. O ne a betsa mme a ruta! He taught Setswana with passion and encouraged us to value our language and heritage as Batswana,” one former student shared.
Under his guidance, students performed traditional dances and represented Mookami not only in the Southern region but across Botswana.
The pastor also made a lasting impact at Livingstone Kolobeng College, where he was teaching History and Setswana at the time of his death. Colleagues and students alike remember him as a dedicated educator who took a personal interest in the lives of his pupils.
One former student shared a poignant memory of their last meeting with him last year, describing how Pastor Tau spoke with genuine care about family, life, and community matters.
In response to his passing, Livingstone Kolobeng College has arranged a memorial service for the late Pastor Tau. The event will take place today, Wednesday, March 11, 2026, at Ipeleng Hall in Block 8.
Mmoloki Mogale, station commander at Mmathubudukwane, stated that investigations are ongoing. He also urged members of the public facing personal challenges to seek professional support and to speak openly about their struggles.
“It is important to talk and seek help before situations escalate,” he said.
