As Tumasera mourned the tragic death of Sheila Mptswa, who was allegedly raped, killed and dumped by the roadside, the people of a nearby tranquil Tupya, were rocked by another horrifying incident- the gruesome murder of Keatholetswe Jinjinini (54).
Jinjinini allegedly lost her life at the hands of her husband, Lucas Pelego (62). The grisly incident happened around midnight on Sunday.
The couple, married in April last year, reportedly had a troubled relationship. Residents revealed that Jinjinini had left Pelego's home in Seleka Village, returning to Tupya with her children due to their marital discord. Pelego later moved in with her in Tupya.
On the fateful night, Pelego reportedly accused his wife of infidelity. While she was preparing for bed, he allegedly attempted to attack her with an axe.
Her teenage daughter intervened, pleading with him to spare her mother. However, Pelego, undeterred, is said to have pulled out a knife and stabbed Jinjinini three times. She collapsed, and he fled the scene.
The brutal incident was immediately reported to the police, triggering a manhunt. Pelego was later found hiding in the nearby fields and was arrested with the help of the residents. He is currently in police custody and expected to appear in court sometime this week.
Area councillor Michael Baruti met the grieving family on Monday in a sombre and heart-wrenching atmosphere.
“We are deeply worried. The children are traumatised. Violence like this is devastating. We hear he was not happy with her and I believe that as a husband, killing his wife should have never crossed his mind.
“These kinds of cases are increasing at a concerning rate, even repeat offenders among us. This shows that violence is taking an ugly turn,” he said.
The shocking murder has left the Tupya community reeling in anguish, as residents struggle to come to terms with the tragedy. Police investigations are ongoing, while grief and fear ripple through the village.
The case has once again highlighted the devastating consequences of domestic violence, calling for urgent community and societal interventions.
