Police in Charles Hill are holding a 39-year-old man who is suspected to have killed a 28-year-old man in the morning of Tuesday this week at a shebeen in Utjise ward.
Charles Hill Police Station Commander, Lefa Kareng told The Midweek Sun that it is alleged that when the suspect arrived at the shebeen, he noticed the presence of one man who owed him P20.
He walked towards him and demanded that he pays back his money.
“We are not sure how the man responded to being asked to pay back the money but what we have heard is that the suspect got very angry at his response that he threw a bottle of beer at the man. But the man ducked and the bottle went on to hit and injure an innocent man who was seated nearby,” Kareng said.
A scuffle ensued with the man who wrongly got hit by the beer bottle now going after the enraged 39-year-old creditor for mistakenly injuring him.
“Allegations are that the two men then left together still fighting, only for the 28-year-old to return later claiming that he had been stabbed on the shoulder by the man who had earlier hit him with a bottle of beer,” Kareng explained.
Further, he said that the bleeding 28-year-old man then collapsed to the ground, the police were called and upon arrival at the clinic the injured man was certified dead.
“We began searching for the suspect and he was arrested on Tuesday afternoon on his way to Tsootsha. The suspect is expected to appear before Gantsi Magistrate Court sometime this week,” he said.
Kareng shared with this publication that it is common for members of the community in his policing area to go drinking then start unnecessary fights.
He noted that they have recorded several cases of assault occasioning actual bodily harm and Gender Based Violence (GBV).
