A 24-year-old man committed suicide this past Saturday in Dimajwe village near Serowe after he told his family that he was afraid of some traditional medicine potions he believed were planted in their yard.
Officer Commanding Number 2 District Paul Oketsang told The Midweek Sun that they received a report at around 12 noon from the deceased’s uncle, 71, that his nephew had committed suicide.
The uncle explained that his nephew first acted like he was losing his mind and told them that some traditional medicine potions has been planted in the yard.
It is alleged that the deceased started the ‘weird’ behaviour around 10:30 in the morning. According to the uncle, the nephew ran away from home, only to be later found hanging on a tree.
Oketsang said upon arrival at the crime scene, Police took the deceased to Sekgoma Memorial Hospital where he was certified dead.
Oketsang noted that suicide incidents in his area are worrisome, urging parents to communicate with their children in order to ensure that they are well emotionally, and deal with any challenges they may be experiencing.
Dikakapa tsa Dingaka Association of Botswana spokesperson, Onthatile Tshukudu, said witchcraft is real and in some instances, dolls are used to terminate someone’s life.
According to Tshukudu, when one is possessed by evil spirits, they may enable him to see what people do not see. He explained that such spirits could command and instruct the victim to take their own life.
“If one realises that they may be possessed by evil spirits, they can be exorcised and the evil spirit can be taken out,” Tshukudu said.
