A 39-year-old man from Kanye, Bonolo Kgaotlhe, has been arrested for scalding his mother with boiling water.
Kgautlhe appeared visibly confused when he came before Kanye Magistrate Koziba Kgakole-Mokokong last week. He was unkempt, his woolly jersey covered in bits of dry leaves.
State prosecutor, Inspector Andy Motsumi, informed the court that the accused had been on the run and in hiding since the incident of September 2024.
He was arraigned and charged with assault occasioning bodily harm for allegedly scalding his 58-year-old mother, Sesha Kgotlaetsile, with boiling water, causing injuries to her body.
In court, he pleaded guilty and stated that he could not afford a lawyer. When asked what might have led to the attack, the prosecutor told The Midweek Sun that all they know is that the mother was seated quietly when the accused allegedly poured the boiling water on her.
According to Section 247, Cap 08:01 of the Penal Code, any person convicted of assault occasioning actual bodily harm is liable to imprisonment for a term not exceeding five years, with or without corporal punishment.
The case continues on February 18th.
