MAGATWE/GOSSIP
What do Bangwato royal uncles really want?
Kana kgang! We gather that the royal uncle from Gammangwato have been delegated by their Kgosikgolo to go to seek clarity from the Pressident of Botswana on what really is the cause of the impasse between their chief and the State. Gatwe their intensions were also to mediate in the stand off. And now, as emissaries of their Kgosikgolo, we gather they have been advised to seek audience with the president’s emissary, Local Government and Rural Development minister who incidentally happens to come from Gammangwato and is very close by blood to the royal enclave. We guess this should have been such an easy undertaking given that the mediation exercise would have Bangwato on both sides of the mediation table. But lo and behold, gatwe the Ngwato royal uncles have refused to meet and talk to the minister, saying bone they want to face the President and not a minister. In other words, Kgosikgolo’s representatives did not want to meet the President’s representatives. We hear from corridor talk that the royal uncles were then told that if they want the President to be present at the meeting, then they too should come with Kgosikgolo to level up things. Such a gracious offer from a State President – agreeing to honour such a request, and still the royal uncles refused, saying their Kgosikgolo needed not be in that meeting as they were his representatives. Yet they did not agree to seeing the President’s representatives. What nerve! Now they are crying that it was an insult that the President refused to see them??? What do they really want? Are we missing something? the Ngwato royal uncles have refused to meet and talk to the minister, saying bone they want to face the President and not a minister. Gone mme gatwe Rre Kgama o tshaba eng?
In this ensuing drama between Tautona Masisi and Rre Khama, there remains one thing that remains a mystery, if magatwe a re a utlwang ke nnete. Picture this: while still in the BDP and he was fighting Tautona Masisi, gatwe some party elders made an effort to reconcile the two men. They went to Tautona Masisi and suggested a mediation session. We are told gore nnyaa Tautona Masisi agreed and told them to bring Rre Kgama along to the meeting. When the delegation told Rre Kgama about the response from Tautona Masisi, Rre Khama refused to go and be in the same room and on the same table with Tautona, insisting that the BDP elders should continue with the mediation without him. This the President declined. Fast forward to 2022 – the President again tells the royal uncles that he has no problem with the mediation talks, as long as Rre Khama is present. Again the royal uncles refuse, saying there is no need for Rre Khama to be present, they will meet the President on their Chief’s behalf. There are those who argue that should Rre Khama attend that meeting, he will be arrested. Fine, at this moment he allegedly has a case to answer with the security organs – and the arrest may as well happen. But remember he has always been refusing to attend the mediation even before he had any case to answer, while he was still a part of the BDP. Nako ya teng o ne a tshaba eng? What is it that Rre Khama is avoiding to always decline the offer to be in the same room with Tautona Masisi and the mediators? Is it even fair to say the President refuses to meet the mediators when he has said he is ready as long as there is equal representation of the sparring parties?
