VILLAGE WITHOUT SIN

Lentswelemoriti village in the Bobirwa district is a village like no other, it is a village without sin, pure as snow.

This has been confirmed by statistics that were shared with the District Council members last month.

When villages like Bobonong, Tsetsebjwe, Mmadinare and others are experiencing increasing crime rates, Lentswelemoriti stood tall with zero cases, not even defilement nor rape.

Rape and defilement are Botswana’s biggest headache. Actually the country was recently reported to be among countries topping rape statistics globally, and every corner of Botswana is guilty of the crimes - but not in Lentswelemoriti

When asked what it is that they are doing differently in Lentswelemoriti, Nonofo Seretse, chairperson of the Village Development Committee (VDC) sresponded that they are a Christian village.

All villagers are members of the Zion Christian Church (ZCC) and that is why their village is very peaceful.

There is no such thing as going out for a night of fun at a bar or a club. In fact, there are no bars, alcohol or cigarettes in their village. This means that residents are always in their sober minds all year round.

The only entertainment available is at church during all night religious practice of ‘Kosha’. When there is no such, everyone is expected to be home and not roaming the streets.

“Our children know that by 7 o’clock in the evening, they have to be home, every parent should know where their child is. It is a law that has been here for so many years and we are at peace.

“It is taboo to hear of a man raping a child here or someone breaking into someone else’s house,” Seretse said.

They are a small population of 250 people and this enables them to know each other.

“I am now aged 74 years old, I have lived here all my life and I cannot tell you about any ills (crime) that happened in our area,” he said.

Seretse said that although they have a small population, they have developments like a primary school and a post office.

“The only thing we do not have is a tarred road, we hope to have one soon because we struggle a lot with buying food.

“We buy food at the nearby village of Motlhabaneng, which is some 30-40km away. During rainy season, it is great struggle for us,” he said.

Semolale station commander Superintendent, Edward Leposo confirmed that Lentswelemoriti is a very reserved area.

“We have no issues with that place, since my arrival here last year, I have never heard of any case being attended to in Lentswelemoriti.

“They are pure like that, church going people and we cannot take anything away from them,” he said.
