Body of a woman found decomposed inside an absent man's house
The body of Bajwadi Nkhai (60) of Palla Road village was found decomposed inside a corrugated iron house in Broadhurst Extension 27 in Gaborone this past weekend.
Her body was discovered after the owner of the house informed the police that there was a foul smell coming from inside one of the houses she had rented out. When the police arrived at the said house, they found a woman lying unconscious on the ground and her body decomposed.
Both the police and the house owner were not sure what could have happened or who the lady was. The house owner informed the police that she had not rented out the house to a woman but rather to a man, Uyapo Bashayi (40).
The man who hails from Themashanga village situated in the North-East District, was last seen by the landlord on the 4th of November 2024.
After identifying the body, the police figured out that the woman was from Palla Road but stayed in Tawana. They visited her house and found her house intact but there was still no sign of Bashayi.
Due to the bad state of Nkhai’s body, the police could not delay any further, hence pathologists conducted a postmortem the next day at Extension 27.
She was then transported to Palla Road for burial the same day. The burial ceremony happened late Sunday afternoon.
The suspect in the death of Nkhai, Bashayi, was arrested on Monday in Gaborone West after an intensive search. He appeared before Broadhurst Magistrate Court in Gaborone this past Tuesday.
He has been remanded in custody and will appear again on the 23 December 2024.
Reached for comment, Assistant Superintendent Maemo Victor Leshiba of Broadhurst Police confirmed investigating the matter. He explained that their preliminary investigations suggest that the deceased was killed, and evidence gathered points to Bashayi hence his arrest.
They are not sure if the deceased was killed on the same day the accused was seen or not, however, her decomposed state suggested that she had been dead for days.
The police boss said they have not been able to establish with certainty if Nkhai and Bashayi were romantically involved or not.
He noted that they conducted the post-mortem on Sunday morning in the presence of the deceased family who were advised to bury her immediately.
