An inmate who died ‘mysteriously’ after prison officers restrained him for allegedly attacking one of their own in a Kasane prison last week will be laid to rest this Wednesday in Nata.

In an interview with The Midweek Sun, Botswana Prisons Public Relations Officer, Oagile Kojane said the 29-year-old male inmate, Boitumelo Gaosekelwe who started his seven-year jail sentence in March this year had difficulty accepting that he was in jail and was full of anger.

He allegedly attacked and seriously injured an officer with a metal object.

According to Kojane, the deceased was incarcerated for grievous bodily harm. He said during the time of the incident, Gaosekelwe was physically aggressive to the officer and some prison officers came to rescue their colleague, and in the process he became more aggressive causing some injuries.

“Both the inmate and the officer were taken for medical assistance and upon arrival the inmate unfortunately lost his life. Currently, the prison officer is still in hospital following his serious injuries,” said Kojane, who could not be brought into revealing detailed circumstances through which the inmate eventually died as the matter is said to be under investigation.

Kojane noted that inmates and prison officers at the Kasane Prison are now getting counselling regarding the traumatising incident, that left the public with more questions than answers of what could have transpired within the prison walls The
