* Meet the CV Guru that has a streak of luck

Many are yearning for a breakthrough when it comes to new employment opportunities. Application letters, accompanied by the right documents including their Curriculum Vitae (CV) are sent almost daily, but still nothing.

For some hope turns into despair. And as we approach the new year, many are dreaming about the time they will finally get their big break.

This is where the expertise of Uyapo Stephen Samuel, 29, comes in. Samuel provides a very crucial service to those who are not only looking for new opportunities but also those who seek growth in their careers.

His services are in high demand. Following his posts on social media, it is not difficult to see why. Almost every week, he shares stories of his clients who have either been called for job interviews, shortlisted or those who have been offered new opportunities.

Beyond crafting CVs for his clients, he goes further by coaching them ahead of their interviews. The combination of these two is working wonders for his multitudes of clients. On top of this, he shares CVs of his clients where there are job openings, and the success rate has been incredible.

On average he transforms between 40 and 60 CVs in a month. His other services include providing Career Development advice, CV coaching and public speaking, as well as interview preparations.

In the words of acclaimed American poet, and storyteller, “Try to be a rainbow in someone’s cloud,” this is exactly what Samuel strives to do daily. In a nutshell, Samuel is a jack of all trades. Wearing many hats, Samuel is also a Banker, Employment Creation Advocate by that strives to grow with his clients individually and business wise through banking solutions.

He also happens to be a mental health advocate and a youth empowerment activist. He is also a Personal Development Advocate who has started to share his story and experiences in public forums to inspire others.

In an interview with this publication, he explains that he is passionate about restoring hope to the unemployed and helping those who are employed to progress. When he lost his job due to company closure, he realised that brand positioning was very important, hence he worked tirelessly to ensure that he has a document that would reflect the true reflection of his professional background. He decided to do the same for others to get jobs.

“The need to assist the unemployed and those employed to progress in their respective areas of interest is what inspired me to go into this business,” he explains.

He amassed his experience over time, through studying and engagements with recruitment agencies such as Staffwise who he credits for tremendously helping him in job placement and CV reviews.

Among common mistakes that he often picks from CVs, are spelling mistakes and bad grammar. Others include failure to tailor make your CV for a specific job vacancy, particularly in the professional bio, no oversight of job duration including months, for example, January 2020 to December 2022, as well as not mentioning achievements.

“This is a true reflection of your value add to any business,” he notes.

He says the success rate of his clients is impressive. “On a monthly basis, about 20 clients go for interviews, 20 are usually hired on permanent basis,” Samuel says.

His busiest season is December and January. His challenges include impatient clients. His says there is a need to bridge the employment gap by nurturing talent and soft skills to better place people in jobs.

“As we go through the Forth Industrial Revolution, it is up to us to also transition and better position ourselves in jobs that are currently relevant,” he shares. Over the years, Samuel has learnt with precision to juggle his eight to five job as a Personal and Business Banker at Bank Gaborone and his other business. He has allocated Monday, Wednesday and Thursday evenings to CVs. During working hours, he is strictly not available.

“Those that send messages requiring the service can only be attended to after 1800HRS every day, provided I am not working,” explains Samuel, adding that restoring hope is the key highlight of helping people. "Some people get called for interviews after years of applying with no luck, which gives me joy," he says, adding that

“I am at a point where I even assist EXCO employees get called for interviews at other organisations. How great is that.”

Samuel holds a Bachelor of Honours Degree in Business Entrepreneurship from the University of Derby through Botswana Accountancy College and a Certificate of Proficiency in Short Term Insurance, as well as Professional Development Certificates in the Risk and Banking space.
