Govt. commits to building 61,000 houses

President Advocate Duma Gideon Boko says his administration’s bold and people-centred vision for Botswana’s future is not a political gimmick but a pledge they are ready to fulfil.Officiating at the ground-breaking ceremony of the Bonno Target 3000 Initiative, a transformative 24-month national housing programme, Adv. Boko stated that housing is not a luxury but a right.Boko has maintained that the right to shelter is a fundamental right that people should not beg for. He argues that the right shelter means a proper and habitable shelter.Adv. Boko underscored the government’s steadfast commitment to making this right a tangible reality for every citizen.The BONNO programme entails building 100,000 houses in two years, covering all 61 constituencies. The first phase, which begins on June 20 this year, targets the construction of 1,000 houses per constituency, amounting to 61,000 homes.The second phase of construction is expected to begin on September 16th 2025.The President emphasised that this initiative goes beyond just the construction of houses.He stated that it is a vehicle for democratising wealth and ensuring that every Motswana, regardless of socio-economic background, has access to a safe, dignified, and affordable home.He highlighted that it is time to move from vision to reality, where most Batswana live in decent housing.Boko outlined that within the next three years, the government will deliver 100,000 housing units across 61 constituencies and create 100,000 jobs, positioning this initiative among the most impactful development efforts in Botswana.The Botswana Housing Corporation (BHC), in partnership with Ongos Valley, is spearheading this flagship development.Key features of the project include: affordable housing options accessible to all income levels; Infrastructure, including paved roads, clean water, sanitation, and green spaces; Integrated community amenities such as schools, clinics, and recreational facilities; and over 30,000 job opportunities, including 4,000 living wage roles for youth, local contractors, and small businesses.The inaugural 3,000 units will be built in Kgale View, setting the stage for a transformative shift in Botswana’s housing landscape.
