Police have discovered what appear to be human bones along the Serowe-Paje road, sparking suspicions that the bones may be linked to a foiled robbery and the disappearance of a 44-year-old Mapo Nkwaila. The bones, found this past Saturday, have been sent for forensic analysis to confirm if they are human and to determine their identity.
Reliable sources suggest the remains could belong to Nkwaila from Lotsane ward, Palapye, who was reported missing on January 7 after his family last saw him just before Christmas last year. The discovery comes amid allegations that Nkwaila was part of a group of five men who attempted to rob a Chinese businessman in Palapye last year.
During the attempted robbery, the businessman reportedly opened fire on the intruders, injuring two of them. The gang fled the scene, helping their injured accomplices into a getaway car. However, they soon realized Nkwaila had succumbed to his injuries. According to sources, the group then proceeded to drop one of the injured men at home before going back to dump Nkwaila’s body in the bushes.
The case took a turn when police in Francistown recently arrested one of the suspects in connection with a series of robberies in the area. During questioning, the suspect implicated his accomplices, leading to the arrest of the remaining four gang members. When interrogated about Nkwaila’s whereabouts, they confessed that he had died during the foiled robbery and that they had abandoned his body in the bush.
Acting on this information, police went to search the mentioned area and recovered bones and a few articles of clothing. However, authorities have not yet confirmed if the remains belong to Nkwaila.
Police spokesperson Assistant Commissioner Near Bagali stated, “I can only confirm that we have arrested four men in connection with a robbery that took place in Palapye last year, and we are still searching for the fifth man. At this stage, we cannot link the discovered bones to the missing man reported in January.”
Forensic analysis is underway to establish the identity of the bones, and investigations continue. Police are urging anyone with relevant information to come forward as they work to unravel the full story behind the chilling discovery.
