Rasesa residents tell Kgosi Maleele to stop acting like a 'headless chicken'

Kgosi Sesa Maleele of Rasesa in the Tswapong District says he would rather be dethroned from his top position than to have Rasesa recognised as a ward instead of a village.

This follows concerns from divided residents of Rasesa who have pointed fingers at their Kgosi for pushing forward his own interests to have Rasesa recognised as an independent village, while they want to continue as part of Tumasera merger. Tumasera is an acronym of four wards- Tupya, Malete, Rasesa and Seleka- which for over 40 years have been known to make up Tumasera village.

However, in 1995 Seleka made it clear that they do not want to be part of the merger if it meant that their village would be reduced to a ward. They successfully pleaded their case in court and it was ordered that they should not be forced to be named anything they are not comfortable with.

Years passed with the other three not complaining, believing strongly that the merger was for the good of all as far as developments were concerned. However, when Kgosi Maleele assumed power, , he felt the elders had erred when agreeing to the merger, he then wrote a letter to authorities demanding that Rasesa wants out of the merger.

To his satisfaction, Minister Kgotla Autlwetse recently visited the people of Tswapong to tell them that government had taken a decision to disband Tumasera, and that all the four wards will be recognised as independent villages.

Maleele has not once hidden his contentment with the minister's decision. Even as letters flew left and right out of Tumasera - some angry at minister Autlwetse and others praising him - Maleele has always maintained that he wants to lead a village not a ward.

Realising that their Kgosi was pulling in the opposite direction, the divided people of Rasesa summoned him to a meeting to tell him that if he continues behaving like a “headless chicken,” they will be left with no other choice but to remove him from his position as Kgosi.

They also vowed that if he does not act properly, they will shun him and not attend a single meeting of his. The unhappy residents said their Kgosi was disrespectful as he was writing letters to government and claiming to be representing them when he had never consulted them to hear their opinions.

“I have told them that they might as well remove me from the position of Kgosi if they so wish because I am not backing down. I am in support of what the minister told us not so long ago. How can I go against government instructions” Maleele wondered?

He confirmed that his people are indeed divided between those who support him and those against him. However, he will not let those who are not happy with his decisions to derail him, he remains resolute that Rasesa be recognised as a village.

He rubbished claims that he was being misled as Kgosi by people close to him who feed him information that being a village Kgosi has better financial benefits than when he is a kgosana.
