Thieves got a lot more than they had bargained for on Monday morning at Gabane when members of the community successfully tracked them down and handed them to the police.

But before the police were called in, members of the community took their anger out on the suspected thieves, beating them blue and black.

The Midweek Sun has a video of a man seen begging for mercy, telling the angry mob that they should spare his life and he will direct them to the person who stole their belongings.

“Aoo banna, tlhe banna se mpolaeng, ke tla leka go le isa ko mothong wa teng, motho yo nneetseng dilwana o nna ha,” the man pleaded.

Station commander at Mogoditshane Police Superintendent Boemo Bok said that they received a report on Monday morning that some items such as laptops and a football kit among others, had been stolen from a car.

And while they prepared to attend to the matter, the police received information that some members of the community had successfully tracked down the suspects.

“When we arrived at the location where the suspects were said to be hiding, we indeed found that they were in possession of some of the items that had been reported missing from the car.

“We then took two men in and began hunting for the third accused, he was arrested on Tuesday and the men are likely to appear before court on Wednesday,” he said.

The third suspect was allegedly brought to the police by members of the community and he was not spared from the mob attack. Bok could not confirm or deny allegations that the mob had taken the law into their own hands.

He advised people to desist from taking the law into their own hands saying they will not hesitate but open a case against anyone suspected of battering suspects.
