Ambassador Dr. Batlang Serema, Botswana's representative to the People's Republic of China says establishing connections with Chinese online businesses is essential for Batswana to access the lucrative Chinese market.
During an interview with Botswana Guardian, Serema said it is important to address online and other technological challenges, stressing the need to expand market reach beyond the country's limited population.
He highlighted the prevalence of online businesses in China, where motorbikes and small electric cars are commonly used for distribution. Serema noted that many Chinese consumers prefer shopping from the comfort of their homes via mobile phones rather than visiting physical stores. He wondered whether Batswana could not take advantage of these online markets and integrate their products there. His primary goal as Ambassador in China is to facilitate the establishment of Chinese companies within Botswana. He emphasised that through their investments, these companies cannot only participate in tenders and projects but also contribute to the creation of much-needed employment opportunities. Moreover, he highlighted the importance of fostering partnerships between these companies, the government, and local businesses in Botswana.
Additionally, Serema stressed the significance of exploring avenues for Botswana-produced goods to access the Chinese market. He noted that this strategic approach was influenced by discussions at a recent Envoys Conference.
Moving forward, his focus will be on promoting Botswana in the Chinese market and encouraging collaboration between Chinese entities and local businesses, as well as recognising that this symbiotic relationship is essential for generating economic value and, ultimately, more job opportunities.
"This means we will have to seek partnerships in order to attract FDI because every Ambassador should do this to move the needle to 5.7 percent growth in order for Botswana to achieve high income status by 2036, as well as achieve an inclusive, knowledge-based economy."
Serema highlighted that the Chinese have made significant contributions to Botswana's technological advancement, including donating weather prediction equipment and providing two trucks to Meteorology Services last year.
He emphasised the importance of acquiring such technology and resources. Serema also noted the collaboration between Botswana International University of Science and Technology (BIUST) and Chinese counterparts, particularly in the fields of cyber economy and drone technology. He emphasised BIUST's pioneering role in utilising drones and its fruitful partnerships with Chinese companies driving technological innovation.
Furthermore, he mentioned that the University of Botswana has also engaged with China, expressing optimism for substantial growth and partnerships, potentially extending to space exploration. As a result of these collaborations, Serema noted that the government has recently augmented research funding, which they believe can greatly support value chain development and digitalisation efforts. He further stressed the importance of fostering interpersonal exchanges between the Chinese and Batswana, aligning with President Masisi's emphasis on the necessity for a shift in mindset.
Reflecting on Botswana's journey towards becoming a high-income nation, Serema urged Batswana to seize the opportunity presented by the Chinese government's open-door policies. He highlighted the transformation in China's approach, from a historically closed economy to one under the leadership of Presidents Hu Jintao and Xi Jinping, characterised by a commitment to international collaboration and openness. These include the Forum on China-Africa Cooperation (FOCAC), as well as participation opportunities at international trade expos and forums such as the China-Africa Economic and Trade Expo, the China International Fair for Trade in Services (CIFTIS), and the China International Import Expo. These expos are typically held annually and serve as a pivotal platform for expanding the Chinese market to the global stage.
He encourages Batswana to educate themselves about these opportunities and actively engage in such forums. Notably, he pointed out the widespread participation of many other African countries in these events. He underscored the accessibility of the Chinese market for a wide range of products, even small items like peanuts, highlighting China's earnest efforts to source products, particularly from Africa.

In recent years, he observed a significant number of individuals taking the initiative to self-sponsor their studies in China, while others relocate for employment opportunities or personal reasons such as marriage or visitation. Serema mentioned that the Embassy consistently provides assistance to these individuals, and he encouraged Batswana engaging in business ventures in China to register with the Embassy to ensure their whereabouts are known.
"When one is far from home, there's often a necessity to stay connected with us for assistance, as various situations can arise—such as the expiration of your national identity card (Omang) or passport. Therefore, it's crucial to keep us informed of your whereabouts, ensuring we can update you on relevant matters. We recently facilitated voter registration, a process that some may overlook, yet it holds significance for numerous reasons. I also recently conducted a virtual meeting with our citizens in China to provide updates and information about our country,” Dr Serama said.
