The Botswana Red Cross Society (BRCS) is actively distributing relief items to communities impacted by recent floods in the Northwest District. The response efforts are being conducted under the guidance of the District Disaster Response Committee, led by District Commissioner Mr. Ramogaupi Gaborekwe and Council Secretary Mr. Thatayaone Balapi.
As part of this coordinated initiative, BRCS has collaborated with the Social & Community Development (S&CD) Department to assess the extent of damage to homes and identify affected individuals, including migrants and squatters, ensuring an inclusive response to the crisis.
Progress on Relief Distribution
A total of 100 relief packages, consisting of mattresses, blankets, and hygiene packs, have been allocated for distribution. The progress so far includes:
• Nxaraga – 20 packages distributed on February 4, 2025.
• Tsau & Semboyo – 20 packages for Tsau and 5 for Semboyo scheduled for February 5-6, 2025.
• Maun & Morutsha – The remaining 35 packages for Maun and 20 for Morutsha are set for distribution on February 8, 2025.
Cash Support for Affected Families
In addition to the relief packages, BRCS will provide financial assistance to affected families to help them purchase essential supplies such as food and school necessities for children. Each family will receive P1000.00 per month for two months as part of this support initiative.
Expanding Relief Efforts Beyond the Northwest District
Beyond the Northwest District, BRCS has extended relief efforts to other affected regions, including Mokoboxane village in the Boteti District, which was severely impacted. Further distributions are planned for the Serowe, Mahalapye, Tonota, and Francistown Districts, where essential items will be provided to support vulnerable communities.
Recently, the BRCS team, led by Secretary General and CEO Mr. Kutlwano Mukokomani, was actively engaged in providing relief in the Mogoditshane-Thamaga District, among other areas. This ongoing effort underscores BRCS’s commitment to ensuring that aid reaches the most affected communities across the country.
Through these relief efforts, BRCS continues to play a pivotal role in disaster response and humanitarian assistance, demonstrating unwavering dedication to supporting communities in times of crisis.
