Botswana Climate Change Network (BCCN) and partners have lined up a local conference of youth on climate change and capacity building opportunities.

It is intended to familiarise youth of Botswana on climate change issues ahead of COP-28 and is open to the youth aged between 18 and 35 years old.

The workshop, to be held at the University of Botswana from October 4th - 5th 2023, will be based more on discussions on the climate change challenges in Botswana and discussions on how to accelerate youth participation.

Topics of the conference include; Loss and Damage, Climate finance mechanisms, adaptation strategies, indigenous and local knowledge among others.

Public Relations Officer at BCCN, Boitumelo Marumo said the output document from the workshop will address the shared difficulties that the government, private sector, development institutions and individuals face in accessing and engaging the youth.

“The position paper on youth engagement will be presented to the Ministry of Environment, Natural Resources and Tourism Botswana, the Regional Conference Of Youth, Africa secretariat during the Africa Climate Summit in Kenya, the Conference Of Youth and pre Conference Of Parties (COP28) in UAE,” she said.

They also hope that the Local Conference on Youth on Climate Change will act as a mobilisation tool for young people to engage in grassroots level climate projects and campaigns, leading to a more widespread and collective effort in addressing climate change.

The climate change conference is co-hosted by BCCN together with Global Shapers Community GaboroneHub, Green Habitat Botswana and Sustain267 to stamp the message of collaboration and partnerships in climate change.

Marumo told Botswana Guardian that this is a one-of-a-kind conference by youth for youth in Botswana concerning climate change is created in 10 fundamental principles to guide their work.

These include; building capacity, empowering young people, being transparent, inclusive and sustainable, building community, preparing for the UN processes, taking global action, fostering a spirit of cooperation and encouraging creativity, she said.
