On the occasion of International Day of Persons with Disabilities, the Block 8 Community in partnership with Botswana Faith Ministries hosted a special event to raise awareness on conditions affecting individuals living with disabilities.
The event featured a line-up of esteemed speakers who highlighted the importance of ongoing support and inclusion for the disabled community.
Kgosi Kenneth Thari of the Block 8 Customary Court said that the needs of persons with disabilities extend far beyond a single day of recognition. He stressed the importance of ongoing efforts to ensure that individuals with disabilities are fully included and supported in all aspects of society.
The Ambassador of Zimbabwe to Botswana, Batiraishe Mukomoweshuro, spoke about the crucial role of government in creating policies and programmes that enable persons with disabilities to thrive. He underscored the importance of providing equal opportunities and access to resources for all individuals, regardless of their abilities. Children also played a key role in the event, reading speeches on the importance of basic courtesy and respect for individuals with disabilities. They highlighted the need for society to be more mindful of issues such as using disabled parking spaces in malls and public areas.
The event also featured a special address from the Carlson Chiswo CEO of Phoenix of Botswana, who is also living with a disability. He shared his personal experiences and emphasised the importance of creating an inclusive environment where individuals with disabilities are given the space to live their lives to the fullest. He also urged organisations to adopt disability policies and raise awareness among employees to enable them to adapt as well as support people living with disabilities
The event served as a powerful platform for raising awareness and advocating for the rights of persons with disabilities. The Chairman of BSTIUA Ndiye Letsholathebe reiterated that BSTIUA remains committed to supporting and empowering individuals with disabilities in Botswana and beyond.
