The ruling Botswana Democratic Party’s (BDP) primary elections have always been full of drama and this year’s elections promise more. Last month the party released a list of it’s Bulela Ditswe candidates after going through a rigorous vetting process.

However, in a new twist of events that is going to put the cat among the pigeons, President Masisi announced Wednesday that more potential candidates will be dropped from the Bulela Ditswe elections. Masisi made the announcement before hopping on a plane to Los Angeles, USA. Botswana Guardian sources told this publication that by Wednesday night the BDP central committee was still locked in a meeting to vet out some candidates and also review some complaints before them.

The vetting comes after closure of the registration process in preparation for Bulela-Ditswe on 19th May 2024. The registration is said to have caused more factional tensions within the party. The BDP central Committee has been inundated with complaints from ordinary members to structures such as regional and branch committees regarding the behaviour of some of the candidates. Insiders have told this publication that the second phase of vetting is targeting candidates who have breached the party’s code of conduct for primary elections.

Information reaching this publication is that some candidates were on Wednesday given warning letters depending on the gravity of their offences.
