The Botswana Democratic Party (BDP) is determined to regain power in 2029, with plans already underway to address issues that led to their recent electoral defeat.

Secretary General Dr Lemogang Kwape, who outlined the party’s strategy and provided updates on its activities, revealed that the party has been holding consultative meetings with President Dr Mokgweetsi Masisi across its 14 branches. So far, they have visited four - Tlokweng, Mochudi, Kang, and Jwaneng.

The meetings highlighted key factors that contributed to the party’s loss in the last elections. Members pointed to late primary elections and delayed campaigning as major reasons for their defeat. This mistake, Kwape vowed, is something the party will not repeat.

“We must stop being just opponents. Instead, we must be advisors and problem-solvers, ready to step in when those in power fail. We know how to run this country better,” he said.

He stressed the importance of loyalty and discipline among party members, adding, “We are working day and night to ensure we return to power in 2029. Re mo ikgaratlhelong ya gore re boele mo pusong.”

The BDP will hold its elective congress this July in Maun to choose a new central committee. This announcement follows President Masisi’s public declaration that he will not contest the elections. Kwape also confirmed that he will neither seek re-election.

When asked if any names have been submitted for those vying for positions, Kwape said no official nominations have been received, although some members are actively campaigning.

The BDP is making it clear they intend to be a formidable force in the next election. Kwape summed it up, saying, “Our goal is simple: to return to power. Re seka ra nna baganetsi; re nne babaakanyi le bagokaganyi.”

As the July congress approaches, all eyes will be on the party to see who emerges to lead the charge for the comeback.

For now, the BDP is focused on rebuilding its structures and addressing past mistakes.
