Angola became the latest to express interest in having her diamonds valued and sorted at the world’s biggest and state of the art, Botswana Diamond Trade Centre (BTCB) once all protocols and negotiations protocols have been completed.

Last week, Angolan President, João Lourenço rewrote the history of the two countries by advancing the bilateral relationship as he becomes the first head of state from that country to pay a three-day state visit to Botswana.

Although both countries stand to benefit handsomely from each other, Lourenço described his mission as one aimed at coming to learn from Botswana as the two countries are courting each other to foster their relationship and have committed to host a Joint Permanent Commission on Cooperation ( JPCC) in the near future in Luanda.

Botswana, who is the current Secretariat of the Kimberly Process (KP) has been aggressively courting all African countries to have their diamonds brought to the facility. So far, the respective Presidents of DRC, Namibia and Zimbabwe have shown interest and had a Tete- a-Tete with their counterpart, President Dr. Mokgweetsi Masisi, who is leading a campaign to lure potential countries.

Committing themselves to expanding cooperation between their two countries, President Masisi said it was pleasing that the two countries attached a lot of importance to their diplomatic relations which were premised on their shared values of democracy, mutual respect and understanding, as well as continuous pursuit of sustainable development.

While his counterpart, Lourenço commended the outstanding bilateral relations that existed between the two countries, describing Botswana as a special friend in the region with similar cultural values.

In a separate interview with Botswana Guardian, DTCB General Manager Sedireng Serumula said it is their ambition to sort and value diamonds for other producers outside Debswana. "We have started negotiation with another entity as we want to get everything in place, and once we get that in place, we will be able to say more about the scope and the targeted market."
