At least 22 African heads of state and presidents were expected to attend the second Russia-Africa Summit in St. Petersburg, Russia from July 27th to 28th 2023.

A contingent of African Press is already in the beautiful city of St. Petersburg having arrived Tuesday via Moscow, where a drone bomb aimed at Russia’s defence headquarters was defused on the day, as the war between Ukraine and Russia continues to flare.

The Summit is expected to discuss a wide array of issues pertinent to Russia-Africa partnership and collaboration in the new era of multipolarism in which the might of the United States and its European allies is being checked by the emerging economies and political will of the Global South marching in step with BRICS nations of Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa.

In his welcome speech, President Vladimir Putin has noted that Africa is today asserting itself more and more confidently as one of the poles of the emerging multipolar world.

Progress, he said, is gaining momentum across a wide range of areas including manufacturing, agriculture, fuel and energy, healthcare and education. Russia, he continued, supports the aspiration of African nations to secure socioeconomic stability and advancement.

“It is important that over the past few years, cooperation between Russia and Africa has reached new heights. We intend to continue moving in this direction, working to boost trade and investment, deepen cooperation and work together to address such pressing issues as the fight against poverty, training modern workforce, ensuring food security and tackling climate change,” Putin said.

The forum which is attended by politicians, entrepreneurs, scientists, academics, and public figures is intended to serve as a crucial pivot for Russia-Africa relations to make them more comprehensive and far-reaching.

The two events precede the next month’s BRICS Summit that will be hosted by South Africa, and have been a major talking point especially concerning the attendance of President Putin, who has an ICC – International Criminal Court warrant of arrest hanging over his head.
