Toyota South Africa Motors (TSAM) has unveiled the bolder, refreshed Hilux Raider, featuring innovative 48V technology in selected double cab models and a range of Toyota-approved accessories. The Mild hybrid Hilux Raider 2.8 GD-6 RB 6AT starts from R587,200.
The Hilux is Toyota’s bread and butter and continues to be a best seller in the sub–Sahara African market. Known for its legendary reliability, easy aftermarket service and performance the Japanese bakkie staple continues to beat competition across the regional market. In its latter years of the current Hilux generation, the addition of the 48V technology make the dominant bakkie a competitive and attractive option to customers despite it being long on the tooth.
Since the current generation of the Hilux arrived around 2016, there have been numerous rivals that dethroned the bakkie pick up model with the Ford Ranger having become its biggest rival. The Ford Ranger’s arrival some three years back saw the American Blue Oval bakkie dethroning the Hilux in some markets but the latter would soon make a stunning comeback. The other Hilux’s biggest rivals are Isuzu D Max and the Nissan Navara to mention only a few. However, the Hilux remains the gold standard in the bakkie pick up segment, being a favorite with farmers, small businesses and pick up bakkie fans in general
Unleashing the Power of 48V Technology
A year after the successful demo of the Toyota Hilux Mild Hybrid Electric Vehicle (MHEV) at the World Rally Championship in Kenya, the 48V technology is now available in select Hilux and Fortuner models. This aligns with Toyota’s multi-pathway approach to eco-friendly technologies, including hydrogen internal combustion engines, fuel cell electric vehicles, plug-in hybrids, hybrids, and conventional engines powered by alternative fuels. The 48V technology enhances the 2.8-litre GD-6 turbo-diesel four-cylinder powertrain, providing a power boost of 12 kw and a torque boost of 65 Nm. Exclusive to 4x2 and 4x4 double-cab Legend and Raider grades, as well as the Fortuner, this technology improves fuel economy by approximately 10%, thanks to its seamless stop-start system. This system not only allows the engine to be off longer when stopped in traffic but also reduces idling speed and recovers braking energy during deceleration. For off-road enthusiasts, the Hilux 4x4 variants with 48V technology come with Multi-Terrain Select, enhancing wheel traction on various surfaces.
Bold New Design and Features
The refreshed Raider grades boast a striking new look with a redesigned front bumper, honeycomb mesh grille, and new fog lamp bezels. The 2.8 models feature black side mirrors and door handles, while the 2.4 model gains retractable mirrors. Interior upgrades include leather seats and an 8-way power seat adjustment for the driver on the 2.8 model. The Raider 48V adds features like jam protection, auto up/down windows, push start, smart entry, and Multi-Terrain Select.
Extensive Accessory Range
Toyota offers a comprehensive range of accessories to customize the refreshed Raider, including roof racks, rooftop tents, bike carriers, and more. These accessories can be ordered and fitted through Toyota dealers, ensuring a seamless one-stop-shop experience. Collaborations with suppliers such as Ironman 4x4, 4x4 Mega world, and Thule ensure high-quality and competitively priced options.
Connected Service
Toyota owners can sign up for a personal 'My Toyota' profile to access information and services related to their vehicles. New Toyota vehicles come with a device that enables in-car WiFi (with a complimentary 25GB) and a host of Connect services.
