The Botswana Stock Exchange listed bank has received a Silver Award in the Payments category for its ground-breaking solution, Absa Mobi app, ‘a testament to its commitment to pioneering digital banking in Botswana’.
The bank which is led by Keabetswe Pheko Moshagane, received the award at the first-ever Qorus Reinvention Awards – Middle East and Africa (MEA), held in Dubai recently. The Qorus Reinvention Awards – MEA, organised by Qorus, a global association for retail financial institutions, are designed to recognise and honour the most innovative ideas and practices within the financial services sector across the Middle East and Africa. Out of a competitive field of entrants, Absa Bank Botswana was recognised as the runner-up in the Payments category, celebrating its excellence in providing cutting-edge banking solutions.
According to the bank, Absa Mobi Tap is a transformative Point-of-Sale (POS) solution, enabling merchants and Micro and Small Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) to utilise their smartphones as secure contactless payment terminals. “This innovation simplifies commerce by turning off-the-shelf NFC smartphones and tablets into cost-effective, secure payment terminals, eliminating the need for additional hardware, plug-ins, card-readers, or dongles. This translates to lower costs for businesses and offers the flexibility of accepting payments anywhere and anytime via NFC-enabled smart devices,” noted the bank, which is a subsidiary of Africa-focused banking behemoth, Absa group.
Meanwhile, Pheko-Moshagane, Managing Director of Absa Botswana, expressed her pride and appreciation, stating: "We are deeply honoured to receive the Silver Award at the Qorus Reinvention Awards. This recognition is a reflection of the unwavering dedication and outstanding teamwork of the entire Absa Bank Botswana family. It underlines our commitment to delivering innovative and transformative financial solutions, not only to our valued customers but to the nation as a whole."
She said the accolade from the Qorus Reinvention Awards – MEA is a testament to Absa Bank Botswana's leadership within the financial services industry and its unceasing pursuit of delivering exceptional banking services and innovative solutions. The bank remains committed to pushing boundaries and providing outstanding financial services to Batswana.
Pheko-Moshagane emphasised Absa Bank Botswana's core mission, saying, "At Absa Bank, our mission is to empower individuals and businesses through pioneering financial solutions. Absa Mobi Tap is a prime example of our dedication to staying at the forefront of technology-driven banking. This award reaffirms our commitment to providing relevant and pioneering digital banking solutions that meet the evolving needs of our customers in Botswana."
