Team Botswana intensifies preparations for 2016 Rio Olympics

Team Botswana will be based in Dusseldorf, Germany for their training camp before the 2016 Rio Olympic games.

The Botswana National Olympic Committee (BNOC) this week announced that five athletes being Boitumelo Masilo, Loungo Matlhaku, Karabo Mothibi, Leaname Maotoanong, Nijel Amos and their coach Otsetswe Mogomotsi left for Germany.

“The team is expected to compete at a race meeting in Belgium on 9th July,” a press release from the BNOC stated.

Moreover, 800m runner and 2012 Olympic silver medallist Nijel Amos will not be going to Kenya for training as planned.  The BNOC said the athlete will be based in Germany with the rest of the team.

“The rest of the athletes who have qualified for the Olympics are currently camping in Gaborone before leaving for Dusseldorf, Germany with the men’s relay team and senior team coach Justice Dipeba on 8th July.”

“Meanwhile, 400m runners Isaac Makwala and Lydia Jele are already in German. The entire team is expected to be together for the duration of the camp”

A press conference will be held on 20th July to give a final update on the preparations.

On 23rd July, the BNOC is expected to host the Olympic Day Celebrations and the announcement of the Botswana Olympic Team at the National Stadium from 0700am.
