Rollers' future to be decided end of January

The Saturday of January 30 has been set for the Township Rollers’ Annual General Meeting (AGM) that may have a considerable bearing on the future of the club.

The club’s Interim Executive Committee’s Secretary General Khumoyame Masonya last week announced that the elective AGM will run from 0900 to 1600hours, adding that only registered members of the club will be allowed in the meeting. “All members are advised to bring proof of their membership together with some form of identification, be it a Driver’s Licence, Omang or Passport,” Masonya said.

Among issues to be discussed will be the commercialization models from which the membership is expected to give a final say. It is this matter that is expected to be contentious given the recent internal bickering at the club relating to the club’s ownership.

There are members who want Rollers to retain its society status with others rooting for an investor to take over and run it as a business. Businessman Jagdish Shah is currently bankrolling the club but there are some in the club’s membership who view his financial assistance with suspicion and want him out of the picture.

The involvement of another businessman, Somerset Gobuiwang, in the club is also a matter yet to be concluded as the membership remains divided on his status after shouldering the bulk of the club’s expenses years before the arrival of Shah.

It is this meeting that will thus give direction to the club’s future with elections also set to usher in a new management committee after the club was forced into a compromise arrangement that had an inclusive interim committee to satisfy the warring factions.
