Makwala Challenge donates to schools
The 2017 Makwala Challenge Cup that was held in Tutume this past December raised enough funds to buy sports equipment for six primary schools in the north eastern village. The equipment was handed over to all the schools earlier this month by 400m track star Isaac Makwala. The equipment includes balls and related sports accessories for sport codes like football, volleyball, basketball, softball and athletics. Some of the beneficiaries from the football event include Selowane, Tutume, Magapatona and Timbi,Maphorisa and Thini.
The Makwala Challenge Cup is made up of four football tournaments in Tutume who came together to honour Makwala following his dramatic appearance during the IAAF World Championships, last year. The four festive tournaments in Tutume, decided to hold a one-day football extravaganza every year in honour of Makwala who become a national and home village hero.
The fully pact festive season event includes Goledzwa and Tjilagwane football tournaments among others. The proceeds of the tournament are then shared between Makwala and some identified charity projects in Tutume. Isaac Makwala receives 30% of the proceeds while 70% goes to charity. The 2017 Makwala Challenge was won by Tjivulama and the proceeds of the event amounted to about P12 000.00. Makwala received 30% of the proceeds in cash, and the rest is what has been used to buy the sports equipment.
