Hockey tourney slated for Gaborone

The Botswana Hockey Association (BHA) will host a series of hockey activities to launch and raise awareness of the Hockey5s tournament from 17th to 25 June in Gaborone.

The Hockey5s tournament was first introduced by the International Hockey Federation (FIH), in 2014 but it was officially launched and rolled out to countries in 2016. The newly introduced hockey game is played by five players instead of six as normally practised.

Botswana forms part of the National Associations (NAs) that fall under the FIH, hence BHA has decided to take up the international governing body’s call to organise activities targeted at promoting the Hokey5s, all over the world.

Unaswi Matebu, the BHA Chairperson said in an interview that they will be running promotions from the 17th -20 June and begin indoor games at UB indoor sports arena from the 23rd -24th June. Meanwhile, the Hockey5s tournament will be launched on the 23rd June at Botswana National Youth Council (BNYC) grounds.

Other activities to be witnessed throughout the week will include coaching clinic, field hockey games and some exhibitions. Matebu explained that UB Oryx Club would take on the Midlands Lion Club of Zimbabwe, adding that the games will give the local club the time to prepare for the All Africa Club Championships billed for December this year
