BFA lands a P750K donation
Local Airline booking and ticketing Company XL Skyways Travel has donated P750 000 to Botswana Football Association (BFA). The donation was unveiled this past Tuesday in Gaborone.
Speaking at the event, the Marketing Manager of Skyways Botswana Lefa Moatlhodi explained that the financial assistance will be used in a period of three years. Every year the company will disburse P250 000.
“Supporting the BFA’s cause of professionalizing football in the country would come with countless benefits to the economy. These funds could go towards that,” he said. Moatlhodi noted that there is great talent in Botswana and it only needs to be cultivated.
He said if BFA can press all the right buttons as far as development is concerned, Botswana will in the near future export talent. Moatlhodi added that football is the vechicle that Botswana could use to position themselves strategically as strong brands.
The funds, he said could also be injected into supporting the national team (Zebras) materially to perform well and build the country brand. For his part, BFA Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Mfolo Mfolo said the funds will go towards development programmes and women football in all the 17 BFA regions.
Mfolo said that each region will receive about P 11 000. “With that we hope that they will be able to pay transportation and pay referees,” he said.
Mfolo said that the money will not cover all expenses, however they are hopeful that it will reduce the financial strain at regional level. He warned that they expect strict accountability on the funds if not, they will certainly crack the whip.
Mfolo added that it was important that they take development seriously because they are feeders to the elite league and that will lead to a strong national team.
