Murdered cop to be buried this weekend

Sergeant Basimane “Shime” Binikwa, the police officer who died at the hands of petty criminals in Gaborone Block 8 last Friday, will be laid to rest in Tsamaya village this weekend.

Police Public Relations Officer Dipheko Motube said that the Botswana Police Service has lost a great man in the hefty sergeant who was a sports fanatic. Binikwa joined Botswana Police Service in 1996 after briefly serving as a Warder at Botswana Prisons Services.

He was a member of the tug of war team at Botswana Police Service. He also doubled as a football coach for his home village team - Tsamaya Hardware FC - at which he coached his nephew Joel Jose Dijeng who was goal minder.

Dijeng described his uncle as a peace-loving individual who could not even harm a fly and loved children with all his heart. Dijeng said his uncle would always smile and laugh even during times of trial. He said the saddest part of his uncle’s death is that he got married on the July 17 this year, only to die 25 days into his marriage.

A childhood friend of the deceased, also a fellow police officer, Chairman Nfakosi said Binikwa was a reserved man who enjoyed boxing during his time at Shashe River Secondary School where they both schooled. Another childhood friend to Binikwa, Hilda Boy, currently studying in Australia, was lost for words as she described the deceased as a man of integrity and honour since.
